ST HELENS HAS MOVED! We are pleased to say that as from Monday 3rd April 2017 ,our St Helens branch has relocated to  a lovely new office on the 2nd floor of the Beacon Building,25 College Street,WA10 1TF

Annual Administration Fee & Dividend

At the annual general meeting of Partners last week, it was agreed to increase the annual administration fee to £10 per year. Anyone who was a member on 30th September 2016 will be subject to the fee.

The fee was originally introduced in 2010 and despite increased costs here at the credit union, it's never gone up.

It works out at just 0.19p per week, 0.027p per day.

There are no other costs associated with running your credit union account. Even if you go into arrears we don't charge letter fee's like the banks do (around £25 per letter).

The annual general meeting also agreed a dividend of 0.5% which is usually run on or around 1st April

Thank you to those members who attended the meeting and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Elections to the Board of Directors

Due to the introduction of the Senior Management Regime last year and in order to comply with this, the Board of Directors are proposing various rule changes in terms of Elections to the Board, however in accordance with the current rules, one third (or the nearest number thereto) of the elected directors should stand down every 3 years, however they can at this time if they so wish, immediately put themselves up for re-election.

The Directors due to stand down this year are Eleanor King and Eve-Marie Evans, which will create 2 vacancies and they have indicated their intention to re-stand. However any member of the credit union can put themselves forward for election. There is also 1 additional vacancy on the Board but please note nominations from the floor are no longer accepted.

If you wish to be considered for election to the Board of Directors, then you should contact the Chief Executive (traceyfletcher@partnerscreditunion.co.uk) at least 14 days prior to the meeting for the necessary forms and application.  Before doing so it is important that you read the following.

Where the Board believes that a Member putting themselves forward for election should not do so under the clauses set out in the rules, they have the authority not to allow the Members nomination to be put forward. If the member wishes to challenge this decision, then the matter will be added to the agenda of the next General Meeting at which a vote will be held to either ratify or overturn the Boards decision (such a vote being decided by a majority show of hands).

If for any election the number of nominees does not exceed the number of vacancies to be filled, a proposal to dispense with the election procedure and to declare that all nominees are duly elected may be proposed to the annual general meeting. If such a proposal is carried by a majority vote of the Members present at the meeting, the chairperson shall declare that the nominees for that election are duly elected

Regulatory Requirements

Credit unions are required to assess new credit union directors (serving from 7 March 2016 or later) for fitness and propriety as described in the PRA rulebook. Specifically the credit union must:

  • Obtain a criminal records (DBS) check for new non-executive director.
  • Take reasonable steps to obtain appropriate references covering at least the past 5 years of service from that person's current and previous employers and from organisations at which that person served or is also still serving as a Non-executive Director.
  • Provide a reference to another regulated firm as soon as reasonably practicable containing all the relevant information of which it is aware.

In deciding whether a non-executive director is fit and proper, a credit union must be satisfied that the person:

  1. has the personal characteristics (including being of good repute and integrity);
  2. possesses the level of competence, knowledge and experience;
  3. has the qualifications; and
  4. has undergone or is undergoing all training

Credit unions are not required to assess or obtain DBS checks for non-executive directors which were approved by the regulator before 7 March 2016 and have continued in the same role.

A credit union must contractually oblige all (new and existing) non-executive directors to:

  1. act with integrity;
  2. act with due skill, care and diligence;
  3. be open and co-operative with the FCA, the PRA and other regulators; and
  4. disclose appropriately any information to the FCA or PRA which they would reasonably expect notice.

Enforcement

Despite the divergent scope of the two regulators, both regulators will retain the ability to take enforcement action against any senior manager if warranted.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and if you have any queries please contact us.

S.O.S. MEMBERS – AFFORDABLE SEASON TICKET & MEMBER SALE LOANS

Rising ticket prices is a major concern for fans – the activity of the past few weeks has shown that – and fighting them is an ongoing policy for Spirit of Shankly.

The time of year is fast approaching when we have to think about raising funds for season-ticket renewal or the twice-yearly members sale. For this reason, Partners Credit Union, Spirit of Shankly Division, have come up with an affordable way for all SOS members to save easily and access affordable and ethical loans.

Liverpool FC fans who are members of the Spirit of Shankly Liverpool Supporters Union will be able to pay for season tickets in monthly instalments thanks to SOS’s unique partnership with Partners Credit Union. Fans can spread the cost of a season ticket into more manageable regular payments.

Liverpool FC (or the credit card the ticket was bought with) will receive full payment for the season tickets upfront, and fans will then make monthly repayments to Partners Credit Union over the course of the year.

Partners Credit Union CEO Tracey Fletcher said: “We have been in partnership with SOS for about 6 years now offering ethical financial services to their members. Our season ticket loans were introduced about 4 years ago but this year they’ve had a re-vamp with a lower interest rate. We do offer low interest season ticket loans to supporters of other teams, however the unique partnership we have with SOS means we can offer their members even better rates'

Partners Credit Union is a not-for-profit, savings and loan cooperative providing accessible, affordable and ethical financial services for people who live or work in Merseyside, for UK members or associate members of SOS, for people who work for an employer who has a base in Merseyside, and for North West Regional members of any TUC affiliated union.

Members savings and loans are insured for free up to £15,000 (terms & conditions apply) and we offer many other products and services for our members.

How It Works

You join Partners Credit Union and open up a Membership Savings Account agreeing to save at least £2 per week. This is your own personal savings account and can be used for whatever you wish, the twice-a-year members sale or your season ticket, for example. Your membership of SOS will be checked with them.

To qualify for the loan, you must have been a member of the credit union for at least 6 weeks, saving regularly during that time. Exceptions may be made for long-standing SOS members at the discretion of the credit union.

Up to £2,000 (per family) is available to borrow. It must then be repaid within 12 months for the Season Ticket loan, and within 6 months for the Members Sale loan.

Loans will be paid directly to Liverpool Football Club or the credit/debit card that was used to buy the tickets.

The loans have been negotiated and have a special rate of 7.5% APR – much cheaper than those of typical credit cards. Examples can be seen below.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL CREDIT UNION DAY

People Helping People is the theme of this year’s International Credit Union Day, which is being celebrated around the world today.

Organised by the World Council of Credit Unions, it announced the theme in June. In a statement, Woccu said: “Those familiar words, “People Helping People,” are engrained in credit union speak and characterize many cooperative principles. Since appearing in several past ICU Day themes from the 1960s and 1980s, the phrase’s meaning has stood the test of time.”

As well as uniting the global sector, another aim of the day is to help the World Council’s goal of adding 50 million new members by the year 2020.

Brian Branch, president and CEO at Woccu, said: “In 2014, World Council introduced Vision 2020..  Our objective is to increase credit union membership by at least 50 million from 208 million at year end 2013 to 260 million in 2020. What was a challenge in 2014 – and remains our goal for 2020 – becomes a campaign.

The Vision 2020 campaign will provide the worldwide credit union movement with actionable items, resources and steps to participate in reaching Vision 2020.  Through online platforms and offline empowerment, credit unions around the world will pledge to expand financial inclusion with their co-operative nature.”

He added: “‘People helping people’ has always been central to credit unions’ existence. This timeless concept resonates well with all generations, especially young adults who strongly value socially responsible organisations that put people before profit.”

FSCS Reduction in Compensation Levels

The FSCS deposit protection limit is changing.

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) deposit protection limit is changing from £85,000 to £75,000 from 1 January 2016.  This change applies to all banks, building societies and credit unions in the UK.

You can read more about FSCS deposit protection by visiting their website www.fscs.org.uk

Important information about compensation arrangements

We are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).  The FSCS can pay compensation to depositors if a credit union is unable to meet its financial obligations.  Most depositors – including most individuals and small businesses – are covered by the scheme.

In respect of deposits, an eligible depositor is entitled to claim up to £75,000.  For joint accounts each account holder is treated as having a claim in respect of their share so, for a joint account held by two eligible depositors, the maximum amount that could be claimed would be £75,000 each (making a total of £150,000).  The £75,000 limit relates to the combined amount in all the eligible depositor’s accounts with the credit union, including their share of any joint account, and not to each separate account.

For further information about the scheme (including the amounts covered and eligibility to claim) please ask at your local branch, refer to the FSCS website www.FSCS.org.uk or call the FSCS on 0800 678 1100 or 0207 741 4100.

Permanent Closure of Bootle Office (KGB Branch)

Due to staff holidays & sickness, we had no choice but to temporarily close the Bootle Office on Peel Road between 15th June - 30th September.

We had every intention to re-open as normal on Thursday 1st October.

A full analysis of the Branch statistics were requested by the Board of Directors and these showed that only a very small number of members were physically using the office.  Most were using electronic means for their transactions.  This along with several other factors, gave the Board no choice but to make the decision to close the office.

It was agreed that we would re-open as planned on 1st October until the Christmas shutdown, then the office would close permanently.

However, the week before the planned re-opening, the property suffered extensive damage from an upstairs leak and unfortunately we are unable to open as planned.  We apologise for the inconvenience caused which was beyond our control.

All Bootle branch members were written to immediately to inform them and 2 staff were on hand at the office on 1st October in case anyone turned up.

Having weighed up all the options, regretfully, the Peel Road office will now be closed permanently.

All other branches remain open as usual whereby you can operate your account as normal.

Remember, you can use your Paypoint/Payzone card to pay in at any outlet showing the signs or set up a regular standing order from your bank and if it's more convenient for you, then why not apply for a Visa Debit Prepaid card.  Withdrawals and Loans can be paid straight onto the card which can be used anywhere showing the Visa sign, including cash machines and for getting cashback at supermarkets.  Contact us for more information. .

Christmas 2015

Did you struggle with Christmas last year?  Then don't let it happen again this year.

Even though we all know without doubt that Christmas falls on 25th December, many of us seem to leave it until the last minute and then panic about where all the money will come from to pay for it!

We offer Christmas Savings Accounts, where you can save as much or as little as you like throughout the year.

There is one catch though ................... you CANNOT withdraw it until November onwards.  That's a condition of the account.

Trust me we've had members in screaming at us to let us give them their Christmas Account money and when we refuse, you can imagine - we get called everything under the sun.

That is, until November comes, and they say 'thank god you didn't let me have the money - I wouldn't have had anything for Christmas if you had'....

So it works............

Don't risk your money in some informal savings scheme like a tonnie or with a hamper firm (remember Farepak??).

Your money is safe with the credit union, comes with FREE life insurance and is covered for up to £85,000 with the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Spirit of Shankly Season Ticket Loans

Season Ticket Loan scheme

Spirit Of Shankly, the Liverpool Supporters Union, and Partners Credit Union joined forces a number of years ago and now offer their own Season Ticket Loan to members and Liverpool FC supporters who save in the Spirit Of Shankly Division of Partners.

Supporters, who are already faced with the increasingly high ticket costs, are asked to pay for their season tickets in one lump sum. This new season ticket loan, which is exclusive to SOS credit union members, will allow supporters to spread the cost of their season ticket over a longer, more manageable period at a significantly lower interest rate than credit cards. Some supporters have already suggested this will be the only way they can afford their season ticket this summer and thanks to the scheme will allow them to carry on their season ticket.

The loans are now available to all SOS members and associate members in the UK due to legislation changes in 2012. Those accessing the loan will also be saving towards the cost of future season tickets, European trips or their supporter ownership stake as part of the loan scheme, and those wishing to make full use of the loan are encouraged to join soon, allowing the time to access it when season ticket renewals begin coming through their letter box.

James McKenna, Spirit Of Shankly spokesperson said, “It’s brilliant that we are able to work with Partners Credit Union to offer such a loan to supporters. Liverpool supporters are expected to pay a high price for their loyalty and are given very little support to do so. This loan makes it more manageable for supporters, allowing them to make affordable payments and keep hold of their prized possession.”

Tracey Fletcher, Chief Executive of Partners Credit Union said, “ We value our Partnership with Spirit of Shankly and know how passionate supporters are about their football (myself included!!) Season Tickets are so important to the fans but the cost is getting prohibitive. With our Season Ticket Loan members are able to pay over a 12 month period for their tickets and we hope members will use this route rather than pay on credit cards who charge high interest rates”

James McKenna added, “Working with Partners allows us to work with a proper community based organisation who’s members are placed ahead of profits. As a co-operative their ethos and values are similar to those of Spirit Of Shankly and we hope that we can continue and grow the work we are doing with Partners to benefit all.”

Move Your Money Campaign

In February 2012 Move Your Money UK began to raise awareness about the local, mutual and ethical alternatives to the big 5 banks. While the banks have failed to learn lessons from the devastating crash of 2008 - scandals are just escalating – and the government and regulators have yet to take appropriate action, more and more people are discovering that they have the power to change the banking system by voting with their feet.

Since January 2012 Move Your Money estimates that 500,000 people have switched their current accounts to ethical alternatives such as Co-ops and mutuals.

Building societies such as Ecology have reported up to a massive 266% increase compared to 2011 and Zopa has seen funding from lenders increase by 56%.

The Charity Bank has reported a 200% increase in new customers during the first six months of 2012 compared to last year.

Move Your Money estimates that 50,000 people have joined one of the UK’s credit unions since January, taking their membership levels to over one million.

For many, the scandals of last few months – crippling computer malfunction, the manipulating of Libor rates, mass international money laundering and mis-selling products to businesses have been the final straw.

In the same week that the Libor scandal hit, Triodos Bank saw a 300% increase in the number of online applications  whilst Nationwide witnessed an increase of 85% in online applications. And in the first few weeks of July there was a 61% increase in the number of people requesting to switch to the Co-operative.

Move Your Money has played a significant role in getting the message out there about local, mutual and ethical financial alternatives – a message which is now being repeated, re-tweeted, and re-posted in the mainstream media.

By moving their money these customers are not only sending a message to the Big 5 that business as usual is not going to be tolerated anymore, they are also using their money to invest in projects that improve our environment and our communities.

So join the 500,000 Britons who have already taken action, and pledge to Move Your Money today!

Danielle Paffard, Move your Money Campaign

Photo’s ’in branch’

Some of you will have noticed that when you visit one of our branches, staff will ask to take your photograph to keep on your credit union file.

As a Financial Services Organisation we do have to comply with Anti Money Laundering Regulations and all members MUST prove that:

'they are who they say they are' and

that 'they live where they say they live'

and provide the necessary evidence of this.

We ask to take your photograph purely as an enhanced security feature on your account with us but please note you do have the right to refuse if you so wish.

Beware of Phishing Scam re: Lottery Win

Beware of phishing scam re national credit union lottery win!

We have recently become aware of an email Phishing attack that is in circulation suggesting the recipient has won prize money in a Credit Union Lottery.

The email has been reported to the Information Commissioners Office and the National Fraud Office.

Below is a press release that has been issued recently.

.................................................................................................................................................................................

Phishing Attack on Credit Union Members

ABCUL (the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd) is warning credit union members not to respond to scam emails informing them they have won prizes in a national credit union lottery which does not exist.

Emails have been sent to some credit union members from www.culottery.co.uk, claiming that they have won prizes in a national credit union lottery. While many credit union members are able to take part in lotteries run to raise funds for their credit union, there is no national lottery run by or for the credit union sector nationally. Members replying to the emails are likely to be asked to provide bank details and risk identity fraud and theft if they respond to requests.

The website is illustrated with pictures of alleged winners of the lottery. These are actually doctored photos taken from the Connecticut State Lottery website. A number of credit unions are listed on the site, but none are associated with any such organisation. The website also has logos of Western Union and the Big Lottery; neither organisation has anything to do with the organisation.

Payday Loans Now Available

Thanks to our partnership with Liverpool City Council we are now able to offer Payday Loans to our members who reside within the Liverpool Local Authority Area.  This is a pilot scheme and if successful we hope to roll out to all of our members later on in th year.

Go to our Payday Loans page for further information.

Don't get caught in the trap of the traditional Payday Lenders - your credit union is ethical, affordable and accessible so think before you go online to the others!!!

Very sad news ............

It is with extreme sadness that I have to tell you that our President Paul Hide passed away on Tuesday 23rd October after fighting a long illness.

Paul had been involved with the credit union since the very early days in ithe '90's and was totally dedicated, committed and loyal not only to Partners but to the credit union sector generally.  He was very well known throughout the UK credit union movement and of course locally, initially through his employment with Liverpool City Council.

In fact only a few months ago he attended a special ceremony at the House of Lords in London where he received the National Credit Union Award for his services.

We here at the credit union will miss him so much and I'm sure you all join us in sending his wife and family our deepest condolences and thoughts....

Rest in peace dear friend .....

Are you ready for the new Welfare Reform?

Are you ready for the new Welfare Reform?

Universal Credit

In the not too distant future the government will be rolling out a host of changes to the benefit system centred on a Universal Credit that incorporates a host of existing benefits. Here’s how the plans could affect your finances.

There are some big changes to the benefits system on the horizon.

In 2010 Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions announced plans to replace a number of the existing state benefit payments with a single Universal Credit, paid monthly.

The idea is that by doing this the government will not only cut costs by making the benefits system more efficient, but also encourage people to work if they can.

However, the introduction of Universal Credit has not been supported by all as there are widespread concerns that it will leave thousands worse off.

So let’s look at exactly what’s set to change and how Universal Credit is likely to affect your personal finances.

What are the current plans?

The main aim of Universal Credit is to simplify the welfare system by replacing a number of different state benefits with a single payment.

The payments that will be stopped and replaced by Universal Credit are:

· Income Support

· Income Related Jobseeker’s Allowance

· Income Related Employment Support Allowance

· Housing Benefit

· Working Tax Credit

· Child Tax Credit

Disability Living Allowance will not be incorporated into the Universal Credit but will be replaced with Personal Independence Payments instead.

Benefits that won’t be affected by the Universal Credit are:

· Attendance Allowance

· Bereavement Benefits

· Carer's Allowance

· Child Benefit

· Contributory Employment and Support Allowance

· Contributory Jobseeker’s Allowance

· Council Tax Benefit

· Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

· Maternity Allowance

· Pension Credit

· Statutory Maternity Pay

· Statutory Sick Pay

· War Pensions

When will Universal Credit be introduced?

Under current plans, the move to a Universal Credit will start in 2013.

The role out of Universal Credit will take place in 3 phases:

Phase 1: October 2013 – April 2014

From October new claimants of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit will receive Universal Credit instead of these individual benefits.

New claimants of Job Seekers Allowance will be the first to receive Universal Credit payments.

During this period new claimants of Housing Benefit and Tax Credits will also be switched to Universal Credit, but they will be the last to move over.

Existing benefit claimants will also be transferred to Universal Credit when their circumstances change and they have to re-apply or update their details.

Phase 2: April 2014 – December 2015

Existing claimants of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit who are still in receipt of the individual benefits (most likely because they haven’t yet reported a change in their circumstances) will be moved over to Universal Credit.

Phase 3 – December 2015 – December 2017

The remaining claimants of Housing Benefit will be transferred to Universal Credit, with the final transfer process expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

Other changes

There are a several other changes to the benefits system being implemented as part of the Welfare Reform Act 2012.

These are not strictly part of Universal Credit but could still have a big impact on your finances.

A cap on benefits

One of the main aims of Universal Credit is to “make work pay”, consequently the total amount any family can claim in benefits will be capped.

This limit will be linked to the average weekly earnings of people employed in the UK, and will initially be set at £26,000.

This could potentially mean some families see their benefits substantially reduced, especially if they have a several children.

Although the £26,000 cap was initially rejected by the House of Lords, it became law on 8th March, 2012.

However, the government are now looking into introducing regional variations to the benefits cap.

This could cushion the impact of the benefit cap for people living in expensive areas of the country (like London and the South East) but could also mean that people living in cheaper areas of the country see the amount they can claim fall further.

Personal Independence Payments

From April 2013, the government is set to replace the existing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for adults aged 16 to 64 with Personal Independence Payments.

The Personal Independence Payment will be made up of two parts: a Daily Living component and a Mobility component.

Both of these elements will operate on two set rates, standard and enhanced; exact amounts are yet to be announced.

To claim the Personal Independence Payment you must suffer from a condition that’s expected to last at least 12 months.

In order to claim it you will need to undergo a one to one assessment of how your conditions affect your day to day life; the exception is if you have a terminal illness.

Existing DLA claimants will not automatically be transferred to Personal Independence Payments.

Instead they will need to make a claim to start receiving the payment – assessments for this will start in October 2013 and are expected to be completed by March 2016.

If you currently receive DLA but are deemed not to qualify for Personal Independence Payments when you have your assessment, your DLA will be withdrawn.

Local Housing Allowance rates

Changes in the Welfare Reform Act will see Local Housing Allowance rates increase by the Consumer Price Index rather than the more generous Retail Prices Index.

This move is likely to see the payments you’ll receive grow more slowly over time compared to what you would have been paid using the old system.

Employment and Support Allowance

A 12 month limit is set to be introduced to contributory Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) claims.

After 12 months, the benefit will be withdrawn and replaced in full or in part with income-related ESA.

However, the government expects that 40% of claimants are not likely to qualify for any ESA after the 12 month period, and as such the payments will be withdrawn and their net income will fall by £36 per week.

The ‘Bedroom Tax’

Welfare reforms will cut the amount of benefit that people can get if they are deemed to have a spare bedroom in their council or housing association home – find out how this will affect people.

The Government has said that it will introduce new size criteria for housing benefit claims in social housing. This will apply from April 2013 to tenants of working age. The power to do this is contained in the Welfare Reform Act, which received Royal Assent on 8th March 2012.

What do the changes mean?

The size criteria in the social rented sector will restrict housing benefit to allow for one bedroom for each person or couple living as part of the household, with the following exceptions:

· Children under 16 of same gender expected to share

· Children under 10 expected to share regardless of gender

· Disabled tenant or partner who needs non resident overnight carer will be allowed an extra bedroom

Who will be affected?

All claimants who are deemed to have at least one spare bedroom will be affected. This includes:

· Separated parents who share the care of their children and who may have been allocated an extra bedroom to reflect this. Benefit rules mean that there must be a designated‘main carer’ for children (who receives the extra benefit)

· Couples who use their ‘spare’ bedroom when recovering from an illness or operation

· Foster carers because foster children are not counted as part of the household for benefit purposes

· Parents whose children visit but are not part of the household

· Families with disabled children

· Disabled people including people living in adapted or specially designed properties.

How much will people lose?

The cut will be a fixed percentage of the Housing Benefit eligible rent. The Government has said that this will be set at 14% for one extra bedroom and 25% for two or more extra bedrooms.

The Government’s impact assessment shows that those affected will lose an average of £14 a week. Housing association tenants are expected to lose £16 a week on average.

How many people will see their benefit cut?

The proposal will affect an estimated 660,000 working-age social tenants – 31% of existing working-age housing benefit claimants in the social sector. The majority of these people have only one extra bedroom.

How Can Partners Help?

We plan to introduce a number of new services and products in an effort to try and help our members cope with the reforms. At the moment, these are listed below but may be subject to change and we may introduce further services, so we recommend you visit our website regularly or contact one of our offices to keep you updated.

Benefits Paid Direct to your Credit Union

You can now choose to have your benefit payments paid direct into your Credit Union Account. You must purchase a Credit Union Prepaid Visa Debit Card (cost £3.50) in order to use this facility and your benefits will be transferred onto this each time we receive a payment. You must always leave enough in the account to cover committed expenses such as Credit Union Loan Repayments, Savings, Rent, other pre-agreed budgeted expenses such as gas, electric, water etc.  See our 'Benefits' section on the home page.

Direct Rent Account

You can choose to have your Housing Allowance paid direct to your Landlord which will help you reduce the potential of Rent Arrears and possible eviction as a result. Your Landlord must sign up to the Credit Union to agree to this and you must complete a form authorising us to accept the Housing Allowance from your local authority and pay it direct to the Landlord.

‘Jam Jar’ Accounts to help you budget

The changes in the way benefits are paid will mean big changes for people, noteably payments going from fortnightly to monthly and just one single payment so you may have difficulty getting used to this and budgeting for your household expenses such as utility bills etc.

You will be able to set up a Jam Jar account with us, putting an amount aside each month to cover your bills such as gas, electric, water, TV licence etc so that when the bills are due, you have money in your account to pay them. You tell us how much, and we’ll automatically allocate it to the different pots i.e. rent, gas, electric, savings, loan repayment etc either straight from your benefit payments, payroll deduction. When your bill comes in, you can give it to us and we’ll pay the company direct from your Jam Jar account. Please note if there is a shortfall, you must pay this before we’ll pay your bill. Anything that’s left will go onto your Prepaid Card and you’ll know this is how much you have to spend.

Have your Benefits Paid direct to us!

You can now have your Benefits paid directly into your Credit Union account.

Our CEO Tracey Fletcher was recently invited to Capital Credit Union in Edinburgh, to take part in a very special Royal Visit to the Credit Union by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall.

Debit Card Payments

Remember you can now make payments with your Debit card (not Credit Card!) - just call into our Dale Street office or ring us...

Do you have a story to tell?

Your Credit Union turns 18 this year and during that time we've helped many members through good times and bad.

Did you know that since we were established we've given over 45,000 loans to members to the grand total of £55 million!!!  I often ask myself 'where would those people have gone if they didn't have the credit union?'.

One of our members helped her daughter through university by getting credit union loans.  Things were tight for her and her daughter and during her visits home, the neighbours would put a box at the end of the street and they would fill it with everyday essentials like washing powder, shower gel, deoderant etc for her to take back to uni!  How fantastic is that!  That young lady is now a Doctor and got her first job not long ago in a Liverpool Hospital.  I hope she tells everyone where her mother got the money to see her through her studies!

Another member, a young single mother was going through life working when she could and bringing up her young family.  She had a very supportive family, who one year decided to have a big family holiday abroad and they held a family meeting to discuss.  They decided they couldn't leave out their family member and her children and decided to club together to pay for her and her children to go.  When they told her, she thanked them and proudly told them that she had been saving in her credit union and could afford the holiday herself!  Her self esteem was through the roof.

Of course we also have countless stories of members who have been close to having their homes repossessed or being evicted and those who have unexpected funeral expenses, sometimes for family abroad, and we all know what an awful time the death of a loved one is, made worse by the high cost of funerals.

There are no doubt countless stories like these and I would love to hear from you with yours. Don't worry I won't publish your name if you don't want me to but it would be great to have a record of these.  We're often asked by politicians and even Royalty and it would make us so proud to tell the stories of the work we do to help our members when sometimes no-one else will.

So come on - don't be shy - send your story with the Heading 'My Story' to  traceyfletcher@ partnerscreditunion.co.uk

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tracey Fletcher - Chief Executive

Partners Credit Union wins National Award for Excellence!!

Credit Union workers from all over the UK were recognised at the inaugural National Credit Union Awards for Excellence in London on Thursday 17 February 2011.

Partners Credit Union won the Excellence in Community Mobilisation Award and were finalists in the Excellence in Active Partnerships Category.

Our work over the past few years, co-ordinating the merger of 10 community credit unions to Partners was the over-riding factor which clinched the award for us.  These 10 credit unions would have been closed down by the FSA and in the region of 4,000 people would have lost access to credit union services if it had not been for the intervention of Partners.  For many of these people, their credit union was the only source of affordable and accessible credit, other than the legal and illegal loan sharks!

Paying tribute to the achievements of the finalists, Guest of Honour the Rt. Hon. Lord Michael Howard, QC, said: “Credit unions have been an important part of financial life around the world for many years. This is particularly important for so many who might otherwise be financially excluded. Credit unionism is an inclusive activity.”

Lord Howard was joined on stage by Bobby McVeigh, who has given a lifetime of service to credit unions internationally, and who flew from his home in Canada especially for the awards. Together with some of the judges, Lord Howard and Bobby McVeigh presented awards, certificates and cheques to the winners, who came from all over the UK and NI.

These awards, a first for the British credit union movement, were designed to champion and pay tribute to the extraordinary work of the unsung individuals who give their time and expertise to the credit union movement, many on a pro-bono basis.  Kevin Turmore, MD, Unity Trust Bank said “These awards showcase the fact that credit unions can play a key role in tackling financial and social exclusion. They truly are an example of the Big Society in action.”

New Bootle Branch

As a result of the transfer of King George Bootle Community Credit Union to Partners last month, we now have a Bootle Branch.

Partners Credit Union KGB Branch is open Mon-Fri 9.30 to 4.00 and is situated on 110-112 Peel Road, Bootle, Merseyside, L20 4LA.  Tel: 0151 222 3473.

All members of Partners can now use any branch to carry out their credit union business, so if you are a KGB member but work in Liverpool City Centre, you can use the Dale Street Branch, or if you are a Partners member and live in Bootle, you can use the Peel Road Branch.

We are also delighted to welcome to our new staff team Heather, Paula, Lenny & Kayleigh!

We would also like to thank the Board and volunteers of KGB Credit Union for their assistance and support in making the transfer a successful one.
